We ranked 18 restaurant POS systems by real-world reliability over the last 90 days, using 139 status page incidents and our own around-the-clock uptime checks. A restaurant's point-of-sale system sits between the guest, the kitchen and the card network, so when it goes down orders stop reaching the line and cards cannot be taken. Outages tend to hurt most during peak service, when a Friday-night failure can mean lost covers, comped meals and long ticket times. Most POS vendors now depend on cloud services for menus, online ordering and payments, which makes their service history worth checking before you sign a contract.

- Ask whether the POS keeps taking orders and card payments offline, and for how long. Offline mode turns a cloud outage into a slowdown instead of a shutdown.
- Look at which components fail most often. Payment and kitchen display outages stop service; reporting delays don't.
- Check when incidents happen. An outage at 7pm on a Friday costs far more than one at 3am.
- Subscribe to the vendor's status page so you hear about problems from them, not from your servers.
